OUR MENHADEN Menhaden, small oily fish, are migratory plankton surface-feeders that swim in large schools during the fishing season, which extends from the 3rd Monday in April to November 1. At Daybrook, we operate within a highly regulated, sustainable fishery under the authority of the Gulf States Menhaden Management Plan, with federal oversight by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Emerging markets, such as China and Asia, are driving forces in changing the supply/demand dynamics for fishmeal and fish oil. Fishmeal The superior digestibility of Daybrook’s Prime Fishmeal is preferred by many feed formulators of early stage pig feeds to help piglets grow faster. Additionally, weaning pigs assimilate diets with fishmeal and mature in a much more healthy environment than when fed just plant-based proteins. Daybrook Prime Fishmeal provides essential nutrients in agri-feeds and aqua-feed. Prized for its omega-3 fatty acids, Daybrook Natural (PF) Menhaden Fishmeal is processed specifically for the pet food industry. The fat levels in the fishmeal are 20% higher in order to increase omega-3 availability. After processing, Daybrook Natural (PF) Menhaden Fishmeal is specially treated with natural antioxidants to preserve the all natural product” status required in high-value pet food products. Generally menhaden yield in the range of 10-13% oil which are typically in the 20-24% range on EPA+DHA the top two omega-3 fatty acids but when you also include DPA then menhaden has a total of 23-25% of these highly sought after omega-3’s. All of our fish oil is put through carbon cleaning process to remove environmental contaminants which allows us to be well under all global requirements for dioxins, PCB’s, pesticides, heavy metals and other contaminants that are found in the world’s oceans. Daybrook quality oil is known for being very low in FFA and other oxidative tests such as Peroxide (PV) and Anisidine values (AV). However we have found that some customers have a high value demand for this both as an attractant for fish feeds or baits as well as a natural fertilizer for organic crops. Fish solubles are actually an intermediate product made during the wet-rendering operation. After cooking the fish and then pressing them we end up with an aqueous solution of water, dissolved proteins and fat. After this is run through the oil separators the remaining stick water” is sent to a series of evaporators to concentrate the product to a much thicker and higher protein product. The product that is kept for sale is then mixed with acid to stabilize it for longer term storage to retard fermentation.
